The road to the Southern Conference regular-season title runs through Johnson City tonight. This isn’t just another Wednesday night game; with Furman (16-7, 7-3 SoCon) traveling to face ETSU (16-7, 8-2 SoCon), a share of first place in the league is officially on the line. Freedom Hall is notoriously one of the toughest environments in the conference, and the Paladins will need 40 minutes of absolute poise to walk out with a win.
Both teams come in hot. Furman is riding a three-game winning streak, most recently fending off Chattanooga 75-70. Meanwhile, Brooks Savage has his Buccaneers playing elite ball, coming off a 14-point road win at Wofford.
Bowser’s Big Return
The biggest storyline for Bob Richey’s squad is the health of the frontcourt.
Cooper Bowser is back. After missing ten games, the 6’11” junior returned on Sunday and didn’t look like he missed a beat, contributing 9 points and 4 boards in 24 minutes. His presence is massive… literally. He gives Furman the rim protection and interior gravity they’ve lacked during this stretch of short-handed play.
O’Neal is finding his stroke at the perfect time. While he isn’t the primary volume scorer, he’s becoming a “glue guy” who makes defenses pay for over-committing. He’s currently shooting a crisp 45% from three-point range, providing the reliable spacing the “Blender” needs to stay fluid.
Alex Wilkins continues to be the story of the SoCon. He’s coming off a career-high 33-point explosion against Chattanooga and is averaging 18.7 PPG. He is the closer this team needs, but he’ll be facing an ETSU defense that ranks among the best in the country.
The Paladins remain without Asa Thomas, who continues to sit out with a lower-body injury. This puts more pressure on the trio of Eddrin Bronson, Ben Vander Wal, and Tom House to stay disciplined and avoid early foul trouble.
Scouting the Buccaneers
Coach Brooks Savage has built a team that lives and dies by its physicality and defensive grit.
Cam Morris III. The graduate forward is a problem. He’s efficient, physical, and a major factor on the offensive glass. Cooper Bowser and Charles Johnston will have their hands full in the paint.
Brian Taylor II. A senior guard who provides the veteran leadership for the Bucs. He averages 14.1 PPG and is the primary perimeter threat Furman has to account for.
Blake Barkley. Another interior force averaging 14.0 PPG. ETSU’s ability to throw multiple high-level forwards at you is why they rank 39th nationally in scoring defense.
The Mental Hurdle: Finishing the Job
If there is one thing Furman fans have been sweating lately, it’s the “tale of two halves.” Against Chattanooga, the Paladins built a massive 19-point halftime lead (42-23), only to watch it shrink to just five points in the closing minutes.
To win at Freedom Hall, the Paladins cannot panic when the Bucs make their inevitable runs. Holding onto leads has been a rollercoaster lately, and tonight requires a level of late-game execution that doesn’t rely solely on Wilkins bailing the team out. It’s about managing the clock, securing the defensive glass, and not letting the crowd noise dictate the tempo.
Three Keys to the Game
1. Frontcourt Battle. Johnston and the returning Bowser have to neutralize Morris III and Barkley. If Furman can prevent ETSU from dominating the points in the paint, they force the Bucs to beat them from the outside, something they aren’t as comfortable doing.
2. Second Half Poise. When ETSU hits a big three and the crowd gets loud, Furman has to stay in their sets. No more 11-0 runs for the opposition.
3. Perimeter Defense. ETSU shoots nearly 50% from the field as a team. Furman needs to force them into late-clock, contested jumpers and avoid giving up easy lanes to the basket.
The Outlook
This is a heavyweight fight. If Furman plays with the efficiency we saw in the first half against Chattanooga but maintains it for the full 40 minutes, they’ll leave Johnson City in a tie for first.
