It’s time to stop the bleeding. After another gut-wrenching loss to UNCG on Sunday, Furman (16-9, 7-5 SoCon) heads to Macon tonight for a pivotal tip-off against Mercer (15-10, 7-5 SoCon). This is a battle for tournament seeding and a psychological “must-win” for a Paladin squad that has struggled to close the door lately. Mercer, meanwhile, is coming off a complete offensive blackout, scoring just 49 points in a lopsided loss to Samford.
The Personnel: The Full Rotation is Back
For the first time in nearly two months, Bob Richey has his primary weapons at his disposal.
• Asa Thomas is back in the flow. His 32 minutes against UNCG proved he’s healthy enough for a full workload. While he went 3-of-10 from deep in his return, his gravity as a shooter is the needed piece that makes the Furman offense click. Expect his efficiency to climb as he gets his legs back under him tonight.
• Cooper Bowser’s dominance. Bowser has been the silver lining of the last week. He looked like the best Paladin on the court against UNCG, leading the Dins with 20 points and 6 rebounds. His ability to score inside makes him a nightmare matchup for Mercer’s Armani Mighty.
• Alex Wilkins. The freshman is still the engine, averaging 18.5 PPG. He’ll be in a premier guard battle tonight against Mercer’s Baraka Okojie.
Scouting the Bears: Which Mercer Team Shows Up?
Coach Ryan Ridder has turned Mercer into a high-scoring machine for most of this year, averaging 84.0 PPG. That’s what made their 49-point performance against Samford so shocking.
• Baraka Okojie. He is the head of the snake for the Bears, averaging 19.0 PPG. He’s a relentless driver and the primary reason Mercer has won 11 straight games at home.
• Armani Mighty. He is a beast on the boards (10.4 RPG) and will test Charles Johnston and Cooper Bowser’s physicality from the opening tip.
• The Home Court Advantage. Mercer hasn’t lost in Hawkins Arena in months. They play with a level of confidence in Macon that wasn’t present in their blowout loss at Samford.
Keys to the Game
1. The “Ghost of Second Halves Past” Furman has to stop the bleeding when teams make a run. Whether it’s the late collapse at ETSU or the inability to close the gap against UNCG, the Paladins need to find a way to stay aggressive in the final eight minutes rather than settling for contested threes.
2. Win the Paint, Win the Game Mercer wants to run and score in transition. With Bowser and Johnston both healthy, Furman actually has the size advantage. If they can win the rebounding battle and prevent second-chance points for Armani Mighty, they can take the crowd out of the game.
3. Three-Point Regression Against UNCG, Furman shot just 26% from deep. With Thomas, O’Neal, and House all on the floor together, that number should be closer to 35-40%. If the open looks start falling early, Mercer’s defense will be forced to stretch, opening up lanes for Wilkins, Bowser, and Johnston to work.
The Forecast
This is arguably Furman’s most important road game of the season. A win secures a season sweep over the Bears and puts the Paladins back in the driver’s seat for a top-three seed. With the rotation finally healthy and Bowser playing at an All-Conference level, the Dins have the talent to silence Hawkins Arena… provided they can play a complete 40 minutes.
