The Furman Paladins look to shake off a tough mid-week result as they head to Greensboro for a Friday afternoon battle against the UNCG Spartans. This is a massive “swing” game for the Southern Conference standings, as both teams currently sit at 4-3 in league play and are fighting to stay in the hunt for a top seed in Asheville.
Furman (13-7, 4-3 SoCon) enters today coming off a heart-wrenching 77-75 overtime loss at The Citadel on Wednesday. The Paladins played with a razor-thin rotation and nearly pulled it out, but they now face a quick turnaround on the road. UNCG (8-12, 4-3 SoCon) is trending in the opposite direction after an 85-78 win over VMI on Wednesday, a game that saw the Spartans rewrite their record books on the glass.
Scouting the Spartans: UNCG’s New Identity
The Spartans have transitioned into a team that relies on a dominant frontcourt and veteran guard play.
Justin Neely. Neely is the most dangerous player on the court for the Spartans right now. He is fresh off a historic 22-point, 22-rebound performance against VMI, breaking a school record that had stood since 2005. He is a double-double machine averaging 16.4 PPG and 11.9 RPG. Neutralizing him is the clear way to beat UNCG.
Donald Whitehead Jr. A graduate transfer who provides the steady hand in the backcourt. He is averaging 12.1 PPG and is coming off an 18-point outing against VMI where he showed he can score from all levels.
KJ Younger. A freshman who has forced his way into a primary role, averaging 13.5 PPG. He is an athletic wing who scored 15 points on Wednesday and excels at getting to the rim in transition.
Lilian Marville. Another high-impact freshman in the rotation. He averages 10.1 PPG and provides the perimeter length that helps anchor the Spartans’ defensive schemes.
Integrating the Paladin Rotation
While the Paladins are still missing several key pieces due to injury, the return of a major weapon on Wednesday has shifted the dynamic of the offense.
The House is Open. Senior guard Tom House made his return against The Citadel, logging 22 minutes. While he is still getting his game legs back, his ability to space the floor is critical. His presence prevents defenses from collapsing on the paint, which is exactly what Furman needs to unlock the “Blender.”
The Wilkins Factor. Alex hit a slump shooting from outside the past to games, but he’s leading the team with 17.5 PPG. He scored 15 points in the overtime loss Wednesday and remains the most lethal shot-creator in the Furman backcourt.
The Battle of the Bigs. Charles Johnston has been a warrior for Furman. He will be the primary defender on Justin Neely. Johnston must stay out of foul trouble and match Neely’s physicality to prevent the Spartans from living on the offensive glass.
Heavy Minutes for the Starters. Due to being short-handed, Eddrin Bronson and Ben Vander Wal have been asked to play massive minutes. Their efficiency and conditioning will be tested today in a 3:00 PM tip-off after a long Wednesday night.
Three Keys to the Game
1. Collective Rebounding. You cannot stop a guy who gets 22 rebounds with just one player. Furman must have “all five to the glass.” The guards, Wilkins, Bronson, and House must crack down and help Johnston so that UNCG doesn’t get second and third opportunities.
2. Disciplined Perimeter Defense. UNCG is 8-6 this year when they shoot over 42% from the field. Furman needs to force Whitehead Jr. and Marville into contested, late-clock jumpers. If the Paladins can keep the Spartans’ shooting percentages down, their offense has the firepower to win a low-possession game.
3. Second-Unit Scoring. With the starters fatigued from the OT game, Furman needs a spark from the bench. Whether it is Abijah Franklin or Cole Bowser, someone from the second unit needs to provide 8-10 points to keep the offense moving while the primary scorers catch their breath.
The Forecast
This is a classic “gut-check” road game. UNCG is playing with confidence at home, but Furman is the more talented team when they are executing their sets. If Tom House finds his rhythm and Johnston can play Neely to a stalemate on the boards, the Paladins should leave Greensboro with a critical SoCon win.
